Mets Top Tribe; Julio to Throw Today

Raul Casanova had a pair of hits and drove in a run as the New York Mets beat the Cleveland Indians, 3-1, on Wednesday night. Aaron Laffey started for the Indians and allowed just one run on five hits over five innings. Jeremy Sowers followed and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over three innings. Both are battling with Cliff Lee to be the fifth man in the starting rotation. The Indians lone run came on a solo homer by Jason Michaels. The Indians will continue exhibition play this afternoon as they will be in Winter Haven to host the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch at Chain of Lakes Park is set for 1:05 p.m.

Jorge Julio is expected to throw this afternoon against the Rays. Julio had to leave Monday’s exhibition game against the Phillies because of a blister on his right index finger. Julio said he felt good after being able to play catch on Wednesday. Julio, who’s in the running for the final spot in the Indians’ bullpen, is 0-and-1 with a 2.57 ERA this spring.

Audio: Eric Wedge from Spring Training 2/21

Tribe Skipper Eric Wedge spoke earlier today from Winter Haven.  Here’s his thoughts on the current state of what life is like as the team gets set for being together for the first time as a team in 2008.

Feature on Cliff Lee Trying to Get Back to Form

As Spring Training continues down in Winter Haven, one story that’s been talked about a lot is if Cliff Lee can rebound off his awful 2007 and have a comeback season in 08.  Lee got hurt early in camp last year, and simply never was the pitcher that had a solid career up to that point.

Paul Hoynes of the PD wrote a feature on Lee in today’s edition, and Lee, never one to be a man of many words (an can at times be downright rude) didn’t say much else other than he needs to stay healthy.  Yeah, and pitch better might be another factor, Cliff.  Anyway, here’s the story from Paul below:

Cleveland Indians pitcher Lee hopes to avoid another bad season

Thoughts on the Sabathia Interview on His Contract Issues

Sabathia

I thought it was an interesting decision yesterday for C.C. to come out and discuss his contract for what he says will be the one and only time in the 2008 season. One would think that the local media up here in Cleveland are going to want to grill him about it, so I would not doubt that he’ll have to talk about it again once the team makes it way back to Progressive Field for opening day March, 31st.

As for the interview yesterday, I would totally say take the 12-13 minutes and check it out. C.C. has always been a pretty good interview, but really for the past 2-3 seasons he has matured so much that he is able to control the reporters with ease. With him being a very approachable player that usually never turns down an interview, I thought yesterdays speech was somewhat tense with him laying down the law to the reporters.

He claims that he and the Indians have no “common ground” for a new deal, which to me means that they are worlds apart on what C.C. thinks he’s worth, and what the Indians are willing to pay. He also says that even if the Tribe hands him a better proposal at somepoint this season, he won’t even look at it and does not want to know about it. Wow. Sounds like despite him not coming out and saying it, he feels dissed by the team that drafted him many moons ago.

Take a listen for yourself, but I can tell you from experience that yesterday was not an easy day for C.C. and it sounds as if he is a lame duck player that knows that this will be his last season with the team that drafted him. Also there are some links of stories below about the interview yesterday.

Audio: C.C. Talks About His Contract Situation for the One and Only Time

C.C talks

The biggest story of spring training of course is the contract situation with C.C. Sabathia. Today, C.C. spoke for the one and only time in Winter Haven about his contract, and basically instead of taking questions he came out and told reporters that as far as he’s concerned, he’s focused on the season and nothing else. He said he is not losing any sleep over it, unlike a lot of Indians fans. You can hear the audio from today and determine for yourself your take on it.
