Indians Move Ryan Garko to the Giants
The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has acquired LHP SCOTT BARNES from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for INF RYAN GARKO.
Barnes, 21, is having a dominant season for Class A San Jose in the California League, having compiled a record of 12-3 w/a 2.85 ERA in 18 starts to date (98.0IP, 82H, 31ER, 29BB, 99SO, .227AVG). He is leading the California League in wins, is 2nd in ERA (2.85) and his 99 strikeouts are tied for 9th overall. He has won his last 7 decisions since June 11, having gone 7-0 w/a 1.50 ERA over his last 8 starts (48.0IP, 36H, 8ER, 58SO). He has limited batters to a .227 (82-351, 7HR) average against for the season, including a .203 (26-128) mark against LHP.
The 6’4”, 185 pound left-hander was San Francisco’s 8th round selection from the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of St. John’s University (NY). The Chicopee, MA native was 3-3 w/a 2.06 ERA in 11 games/7 starts in 2008 after signing his first professional contract in June (43.2IP, 24H, 10ER, 12BB, 63K). Prior to the 2009 season, he was named the 9th best prospect in the entire Giants organization by Baseball America.
Barnes will report to A Kinston in the coming days (not a member of the 40-man roster).
